2010 Rod Building Class Update Well, another rod building class went into the books on April 3rd. Once again Gary Wicks and his wife Pat put on a great class. This was the year of the class that almost wasn’t. After announcing the class in December, I had almost zero interest in holding the class so I was all set to cancel it. But at the February meeting we had a last minute surge of interest so I went ahead and organized the class for the 3rd. But then on April 2nd, the day before the class, we got word from Vicki at the KC hall that they had water damage from a leaky pipe and we could not hold the class there. I think I called every VFW and American Legion in the metro area to find a new room to hold the class and I finally hit the jackpot with the VFW in Blaine. Not only did they let us use their banquet room at no cost, we were able to participate in “roast beef sandwich Saturday”. Every Saturday they serve roast beef sandwiches from Mayslack’s for $5 each. I’m sure a lot of you have heard of Mayslack’s and know what a treat it is to be able to consume one of their famous sandwiches. If you get a chance to stop by the Blaine VFW, make sure to let them you are from the Muskies, Inc. and thank them for letting us use their facilities. We also donated $50 to their roof fund as they desperately need a new roof for the building. As usual, we built a bunch of great rods and the new 9 footers look like they are going to be the go-to rod in quite a few of boats this year. There were 20 members and non-members in the class this year and I look forward to putting together another class next year. Please keep in mind that Gary will let you come to his shop to build a rod. So if you missed the class this year and want to build a rod, please give Gary a call at 763.427.0631 and he will be glad to work with you to schedule a time.
